I am Minnie Minhyung Joo, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at University of Massachusetts Lowell. I am also an affiliated faculty in the UML’s Global Studies program as well as the Conflict and Peace Studies program. My main research interest lies in the study of civil conflicts, with a special focus on how the organizational characteristics of rebel groups (e.g., goals, centralization) influence rebel behavior during civil conflicts such as negotiations, splintering, and combat strategies. In addition, another research area of interest is the study of the survival of violent (pro-government) militias and how they interact with rebel groups during civil conflict. My research has been published in Political Analysis, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and International Interaction among others.
I am also interested in developing statistical models that account for various methodological problems that may arise when dealing with data sets frequently used by political scientists. Projects include: Bayesian Misclassified Failure Survival Model, Bayesian Spatial Cure Model, and Top- Inflated Ordered Probit Models. Please see the R Software tab for more information.
A fun fact about me is that I live with a pandemic-cat named Cookie and have lived in five countries (Korea, Japan, Australia, Canada, and the US)!
